UP Diliman faculty, students, and staff, and family members and friends planted 18 native trees on the grounds of the UP Institute of Biology-Energy Development Corporation BINHI Threatened Species Arboretum to commemorate the 59th birth anniversary of the late UP College of Science Dean Perry Ong, October 2.
Ong passed away last March due to a heart attack.
The trees that were planted included katmon, malakatmon, mangkono, salimbobog, and kamagong.
Ong’s family planted mangkono to symbolize the scientist’s firmness and courage.
Last May, Ong was recognized as a UP Scientist III.
A mass was held before the tree planting activity. — with reports from Neil Clark Manuel
